How it is calculated

ROI = (revenue − content cost) ÷ content cost × 100%. The formula is standard, but attributing revenue is especially fuzzy in content marketing: content often influences a purchase decision indirectly and with a delay, rather than driving a direct sale by click the way performance ads do.

Content marketing usually has a long payoff horizon: an article or video published today keeps bringing traffic and leads for months or years, so ROI computed only for the first month after publication almost always understates the real return on the investment.

If content is treated as part of the whole funnel, it's more accurate not to try isolating its revenue contribution alone but to look at it together with related metrics — content production cost, audience engagement, and organic traffic growth.
