How it is calculated
CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000 — the cost of a thousand ad impressions, regardless of whether anyone clicked on it.
CPM is a reach and awareness metric, not a results metric — it says nothing about how many people clicked or bought. To measure effectiveness in terms of user action, you need CPC (cost per click) or CPA (cost per action).
CPM is handy for comparing placement cost across platforms and formats in awareness campaigns — but only comparing ads with similar audience and targeting makes sense: a narrow audience almost always costs more per 1,000 impressions than a broad one.
