How it is calculated

Cost per piece = total spend ÷ number of pieces produced. A simple average, but useful for budgeting: knowing the average cost per piece makes it easy to work out what a content plan for any number of pieces will cost.

The metric averages cost across all content pieces, though in practice different formats cost very differently — video is usually pricier than an article, and an article with a photo shoot costs more than one with stock images. If formats differ a lot, it's more accurate to compute cost separately per content type.

Production cost alone says nothing about content's effectiveness — a cheap piece nobody reads ends up costing more per unit of reach than an expensive but popular one. Compare this figure against reach, engagement, or content marketing ROI for the full picture.
