How it is calculated

Cost per engagement (CPE) = promotion spend ÷ number of engagements. The same formula as CPC or CPL, except the result counted is any engagement with the post rather than a link click or lead.

Engagement counts usually bundle likes, comments, shares and saves together — social platforms most often sum these actions into a single engagement metric when showing stats for a promoted post.

CPE is useful for comparing the efficiency of different posts or content formats against each other, but it doesn't measure business results directly — high engagement doesn't guarantee site visits or sales, so check CPC and CPL for the same campaign for that.
