How it is calculated
Click rate = number of clicks ÷ number of delivered emails × 100% — the share of all recipients who clicked a link in the email. Click-to-open rate (CTOR) = number of clicks ÷ number of opens × 100% — the share of clickers among those who actually opened the email.
The two metrics diagnose different problems. A low click rate with a normal open rate but a low CTOR points to the email's content or offer — people open it but aren't interested in what's inside. A low click rate driven by a low open rate points to the subject line, sender, or deliverability — not enough recipients ever reach the content in the first place.
CTOR is more useful than click rate for judging content quality specifically, because it doesn't depend on how many people opened the email at all — it only compares conversion among people who already saw the content.
