How it is calculated
ROI = total profit over the project's life ÷ initial investment × 100. This is a cumulative figure over the entire project life, not an average per year.
Unlike average annual return (the "Investment project return" calculator, ARR method), this ROI doesn't divide by the number of years — it shows how much the investment grew in total, which is handy for comparing projects of equal length but misleading for projects of different lengths.
The metric ignores the time value of money — profit in year one and in the final year counts the same. Use NPV or IRR for decisions where timing matters.
