How it is calculated
VAT amount = tax-inclusive amount × rate ÷ (100 + rate). Amount excluding VAT = tax-inclusive amount − VAT amount. The formula differs from simply multiplying by the rate precisely because the rate here doesn't apply to a tax-exclusive base — it's already embedded inside the tax-inclusive total, so directly multiplying the total by the rate would overstate the result.
This task comes up often when you know the final price shown to a buyer (e.g. a retail price tag) and need to work out how much of it is tax versus the seller's tax-exclusive revenue.
If instead you have a tax-exclusive amount and need to add VAT on top, this formula won't work — use the separate VAT calculator, where the tax is simply multiplied by the rate and added.
