How it is calculated
Balance at the end of a month = balance at the end of the previous month + this month's inflow − this month's outflow. The calculation runs sequentially from the starting balance through all entered months — a simple monthly cash flow ledger, not a discounted calculation.
The balance-by-month chart immediately shows which month the balance dips below zero, if it does — that's a cash gap: even if total inflow exceeds total outflow over the whole period, a specific month can still run short because receipts and payments don't land evenly.
This is an operational planning tool, not an investment appraisal — unlike NPV and cash flow discounting, amounts here aren't converted to present value, because the question is different: will there be enough cash in each specific month.
