How it is calculated
Share of Voice = brand's metric ÷ category's total metric × 100%. The formula is the same regardless of what's being measured: share of category ad spend, share of media and social mentions, or share of search demand.
Different methods measure different things — share of ad spend and share of organic mentions can look very different for the same brand. Comparing Share of Voice across brands is only valid when everyone is measured with the same metric and the same data source.
A commonly cited pattern in marketing practice is that a growing brand usually needs its Share of Voice to exceed its current market share to actually gain share — this is an observed pattern from practice, not a strict law, but it explains why companies aiming to grow deliberately invest in visibility beyond what their current size would formally warrant.
