Paint and varnish coverage calculator

Enter the area to be painted, the number of coats, the coverage rate per coat (from the product label) and the application loss. The calculator works out the volume needed and the number of cans.

Printed on the label or in the technical data sheet
Spraying — 15–30%, roller and brush — 3–10%
Usually 1.0–1.5 — check the label

How it is calculated

Material mass = area × coats × coverage rate per coat × (1 + loss ÷ 100). The coverage rate per coat comes from the specific product's label — it varies a lot by paint type and surface prep, there is no universal figure.

Volume = mass ÷ material density. Density is entered by hand because enamels, varnishes and primers differ noticeably.

Cans needed = ceiling(volume ÷ can volume). Cost is only shown when a can price is given — calculated on whole cans, not fractional volume, because that's what you actually have to buy.
