How it is calculated

Hourly cost = total monthly cost of the employee ÷ standard working hours per month. It's important to use the full cost to the employer, not take-home salary — otherwise the result is understated by the taxes, contributions and other costs the business carries on top of pay.

Monthly working hours aren't constant — they depend on the number of working days in a given month and the local working-time calendar. For a recurring calculation rather than a one-off estimate, an average yearly hour count is more accurate than a single month's figure.

Shift cost = hourly cost × hours per shift — handy for a quick estimate of what one employee's shift costs, for example when pricing a banquet, a factory shift or a day of downtime.
