How it is calculated
Average headcount = (headcount at start + headcount at end) ÷ 2 — it smooths out staffing changes within the period, so it doesn't understate turnover for a shrinking team or overstate it for a growing one.
Turnover rate = departures during the period ÷ average headcount × 100%. It's measured over the same period as the departures — a month's worth of departures gives a monthly rate, a year's gives an annual one, and the two aren't directly comparable.
Overall turnover often isn't enough on its own — it's worth tracking voluntary departures (the employee's choice) separately from involuntary ones, since they point to different problems, from pay and working conditions to hiring quality and onboarding.
