How it is calculated
Employees per HR = total employees ÷ HR staff count.
A rough benchmark for a full-cycle HR function (recruiting, HR admin, training, engagement) is around 1:70–1:100, but it varies a lot by industry, how automated HR record-keeping is, and how many functions the HR team actually owns rather than just advises on.
The metric doesn't distinguish specializations within HR (recruiter, HR admin, L&D) — for a more precise view of a specific role's load, compute it separately, e.g. vacancies per recruiter.
