How it is calculated
Gross salary = take-home amount ÷ (1 − tax rate ÷ 100). This is the reverse of a gross-to-net calculation: there, tax gets subtracted from gross; here, gross is reconstructed from a known take-home amount.
The formula isn't "gross = net + tax on net" — it's division by (1 − rate): tax is calculated on gross, not net, so simply adding a percentage to net would be wrong and would understate the salary actually needed.
Check the tax rate for your jurisdiction and specific situation — it can differ from the standard rate for certain income categories or regions. If other deductions need to be compensated for on top of tax, account for them separately, before applying this formula.
