How it is calculated
Overtime = actual hours worked − scheduled hours norm, floored at zero: if an employee worked less than the norm, that's a shortfall or absence, not negative overtime.
The norm and the actual hours need to come from the same period — usually a month, but it could be a week or a quarter depending on how working time is tracked. Mixing periods (say, a monthly norm against a weekly actual) gives a meaningless result.
